As born and bred Namibians with nearly two decades of experience showcasing the breathtaking wonders of our homeland, we at Serene African Adventures have been keenly observing the developments since April 1st, 2025. This date marked a significant shift in our country’s entry visa policy, requiring nationals from 33 countries, including many of our core tourism source markets, to obtain a visa upon arrival. We initially assessed this policy’s dual nature: a diplomatic aim for equitable relations, balanced with potential challenges for tourism.
Now, with a few months under the belt, the “opportunities” side of the equation is facing some undeniable challenges that demand urgent attention from all stakeholders.
The Reality on the Ground: A Marketer’s Perspective
Reports from our international airports, particularly Hosea Kutako and Walvis Bay, paint a concerning picture. Despite the intentions of streamlining entry, the reality for many arriving tourists has been one of significant delays. We’ve heard firsthand accounts of visitors waiting up to two hours, and in some cases, even three and a half hours, simply to be processed.
One tourist couple, sharing their experience with Spotlighting Namibia, recounted landing on schedule but only being processed nearly four hours later, leading to a cancelled first-night lodge booking and the added stress of finding alternative accommodation in Windhoek – a far cry from the welcoming first impression we aim to provide.
Industry Voices Raise the Alarm
From a tourism marketer’s perspective, this situation is concerning. The “first impression” is paramount, and these delays, especially as we head into the high season at the end of June, risk tarnishing Namibia’s hard-earned reputation. The alarm raised by the Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN) and tour operators is a valid one – immediate action is crucial to mitigate potential long-term damage to our destination’s image.
The Ministry’s Stance and Ongoing Observations
While the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security has rightly highlighted the N$100 million in revenue generated and the 70,000 visitors processed as signs of the system’s success, our on-the-ground observations confirm that despite dedicated officials and functioning systems, the sheer volume of arrivals can still lead to significant delays. The system, while functional, needs further refinement to truly meet the promise of a smooth arrival for all.
